Eye Opener

I was at a Management Dinner today.

What was meant to be a celebration turned out to be quite of a disappointment, or rather a heavy dose of mixed feelings. For the Management, and for myself, and for the department.

Usually at such dinners, you will see all the 'big shots' (or not so big ones) at the tables, and with keen observation, one would see the who-and-who is licking who-and-who's boots. But this time, it wasn't the usual boot licking sessions. Rather, I saw a lot of artistes playing their own role, and all were masked with pretentious faces.

It is a shame in the world of adulthood. People say politics are inevitable. Children starts playing politics too when they started to 'curry favours' to their favourite teachers. I wasn't innocent too. I played my own fair share of politics to get that Monitress position since Primary School.

But some how it was just plain vanilla, and it wasn't too hurting to other people when we were playing politics in school. However as we become adults and step into society and aim for THAT one single position at the top, people start to play real dirty, or shameless politics. They tramp, slam, shame those they see as competitors. They get real insecure, and started forming teams, groups, camps, to start spiting each other.

And this time, with my very own eyes, I saw how my very own department was put to shame despite doing so very well in the company.

A small department of slightly over 40 people, it was able to bring in the revenue close to what the majority of the company was bringing. But we were still not the ace of the company. We were forgotten, right in front of us, in front of the whole company, despite doing so well. We were transparent that night.

From where I came from, performers were usually held with high regards and respect. Never have I seen such despondent achievers in my life.

What I can say is, well, it's simply because someone is fearful of being overtaken, and has to start trample his competitor before anything takes effect. It's the Art of Sun-zi, or it's the work of an insecured insolent fool.
