I've seen many who are barely 1.5 years with every company they worked in, and is either into different positions, or same position, but different company.
What is 1.5 years?
Taking into consideration the period one gets familiarize with the company processes and colleagues, there is only 1 year to really start contributing and these people leave.
As an interviewer, I am least impressed with candidates who have such short stint in every company, making me wonder just how committed they are with a company, or how clear they are with their career path and their thoughts before deciding on a new job.
When I wanted to switch out of Social Work while in SGH, I didn't move for the sake of doing so. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, and told myself to stay on first until I am sure of what I wanted. In the 2 years as a Medical Social Worker, I contributed my fair share in managing the cases referred by the medical team.
In my 10 years of working experience, I am lucky. I got a job straight from NUS. And when I decided to switch career, it was only that 1 interview I went and I got accepted. My decision to leave the first bank after 3 years was not intentional nor planned. I was headhunted to do offshore banking.
Despite my unhappiness with my last employer, I stayed on for 5 years. If not for this wonderful career advancement opportunity, I would still have stayed on until I am clear of the next step of my career path that I should take.
And the new entrants these days are so different compared to me just 8 years ago.
Back then, training was fun, but we worked hard. My teammates and I never did once try to complain about the load the trainer was giving, and just did what was expected of us. To us, a Head, a Vice President, and whoever the trainer was were seniors. We never thought of talking back.
But now, these new kids on the block are a bunch of outspoken individuals, who dare to speak their mind, regardless who you are. When they were asked to prepare some pre-training materials, one asked the VP of Mobile Sales if he could print for her as she does not have a printer.
There were other incidences too, where when they were asked to do book reviews, they said by the time they got home, they had to cope with preparing for their certifications and had no time for anymore book review.
I can imagine the stress the teachers these days are going through.
It is good to be outspoken. But not at the expense of respecting the rules of ranks in an organisation.

I agree with you. I guess at least you have to stay for 3 years on certain job before move on else where. Except ones is made redundant, probably there is no other better excuse.
There are many candidates who just want to 'try', especially at times like this. Many are retrenched from private banks. I have that fear that they may just be looking for a temporary shelter until the private banks are hiring again.
