Would You?

The not-too-long saga of the CK Tang Executive Chairman Mr Tang being sentenced to 1 day's imprisonment for buying a kidney resurfaced lately: he is now recovering from a kidney transplant at NUH.

I was just thinking - did the saga sort of helped him to shortcut the whole process in getting a kidney here in Singapore since it normally takes 9 years to wait for a donor? But then again, the donor might not be a Singaporean, since it was reported as saying he has relatives in Beijing or the States.

Question is, if that was the case, why would he risk conviction (and eventually his corporate position as an EC in CK Tangs) to buy a kidney from Indonesia?

My personal opinion is this. Putting legalities aside, I do not think it is wrong to trade organs in a limited manner. What I think would be immoral would be to trade some innocent victims' organs and for the traders benefit to from it. If it's a genuine case of someone who urgently needs money and is willing to trade his organ for it, I would think it is acceptable.

But then again of course, determining if the trade is moral and legitimate is difficult. Perhaps that is the reason why the law was set forth to only allow related individuals to donate organs because there is an emotional factor that motivates the donation.
