It's not because of the weather that I bought them.
It's the school holidays again and while the luckier ones are out enjoying their holidays, there is also a group of them who makes use of school holidays to make some extra pocket money for themselves.
So this evening while enjoying my dinner at home, the bell rang and I popped out to see two teenage kids peddling ice-cream. It's quite an usual sight: sometimes it is ice-cream, sometimes it is Yakult.
My usual response, all the time, is to pick up (and hide it) my wallet, asked them some questions making it as it I'm not a ready buyer. Maybe because I'd been trained in school to train children (yes, I train Autistic kids haha!), every move I made is purposeful. I didn't want them to think that earning money is easy, and at the same time, to train them to speak up to strangers.
Of course, I spent S$22 on these ice-cream, and the two kids looked so unbelievable that this fat rabbit would actually hit their tree.
Many may think it's just so silly of me to do these. But I think every little work we bother to put in do help mould these kids as they grow up. I'd rather spend that little money to encourage them indirectly, that so long as they are willing, they do earn money, than for them to get discouraged and become off-stream.
I don't know if my thinking is extreme, but the Social Worker side of me is still very active, and I always enjoy being able to contribute that little in making our leaders of the future a better person.
So my friends, I urge you to support them the next time you hear the door bell ring. And buy some nice, delicious ice-cream to enjoy in this ever-hot Singapore.
