Materialistic - a Thin Line

A friend talked about materialism recently.

And I asked myself if I am one. To me, it's all about interpretation of this word.

Some thinks so long as you buy branded stuff, you are materialistic. Some calls that lifestyle or a taste for finer things in life. I'd think I'm the latter.

A person who's materialistic, in my opinion, is someone who's only has branded things on their mind, and would do all they can to get the things they want, even if they cannot afford it, to the extend of betraying their soul.

And to me, those Japanese students who do all they can to buy that LV or Prada is materialistic.

Because if materialism is so loosely used, then you and I who've been working hard and spending a little bit more money on a better lifestyle, clothings, traveling, are well, materialistic too. Why bother to work hard to earn so much if you are not? What can you do with the money you earned? Do you intend to be philanthropic and give all your money away? And then is owning a car, a private property, enjoying wine and dine, being materialistic too?

For me, I spend my own money, owe no one for my success and my 'materialism' and certainly do not allow anyone to wrong me this way. It's a choice I make to enjoy finer things in life, right to the brand of shampoo I use. Simply because they are of better quality. Period.

I know I have this problem of judging others (and sometimes too fast) but I'm sure I'm not the only one. And to hear such a judgment from a friend you consider as close or good friend, is certainly painful.

After all, the initial comment I had was a general statement to a group of people (of which I know more than 1 have ruined relationships, but heng I do not know them personally).
